This is a fun variation on the Dutch braid. You’ll be crossing each new section of hair underneath the braid, unlike a French braid where you cross them over the hair.

This style works best on long to very long hair.

Tools and materials:

  • Comb
  • Strong hair ties
  • Hair clips
  • Bobby pins (optional)
Parting hair

1. Part your hair

Section your hair vertically from front to back.

Parting hair

Make a second parting horizontally across your hair from ear to ear.

Clip all except the front left section out of the way.

Braiding

2. First front braid

Dutch braid the first section diagonally toward the back right.

As you pick up each new strand of hair, take it underneath the braid and cross it to the other side.

Braiding

3. Back braid

When you reach the horizontal parting, continue the braid but start to incorporate the hair from the back right section.

Tying off braid

4. Tie off

Continue braiding to the nape of your neck.

Wrap a hair tie around the loose hair.

Wrapping hair

Twist it a few times, but the last time don’t pull the hair all the way through.

Wrapping hair

Split the tail. Wrap each piece around the hair tie in opposite directions and tuck the ends into the tie.

Optionally, secure the ends with bobby pins.

Braiding

5. Repeat

Braid the right front to left back in the same way.

The finished style is so cute! You can give it a sophisticated look with hair jewelry pushed into the braids.
