Thrifting jeans

1. Choose your jeans

There’s usually a good choice in the thrift store. Choose a pair that fit you on the waist and hips with straight or boot cut legs.

2. Cut them to length

Lay the jeans flat and line up the side seams.

Measure the length you want and use a ruler to draw a straight cutting line.

Cut straight through both layers.

3. Inner leg seams

Cut open both inner leg seams up to the crotch.

4. Shape the back and front

Fold the jeans lengthways so the side seams are together.

Use a ruler to extend the center back seam towards the lower edge in a slightly diagonal or curved direction.

Cut off the excess.

Trim the center front in a straight line. There will be less excess fabric on this side.

Where to sew

5. Sew

Sew the new seams with the right sides facing.

If you can, replicate the double top stitching of the existing center back seam. This will give extra strength to the seam and make your alteration less noticeable.

Make a standard seam at the center front.
