How to Sew a Gorgeous Harem Jumpsuit From Scratch

This harem jumpsuit is so quick and easy to sew, you could make it in less than an hour. I used a woven polyester, which can be slippery to sew but drapes very well.

My jumpsuit sewing pattern fits all sizes from S to XL, with a slight modification at the neckline for larger sizes.

The way that I fold and cut the fabric for the harem pant jumpsuit means that the stripes will fall vertically in wear.

Tools and materials:

  • 2.25 yards (2 m) of 55 inch (140 cm) wide woven polyester or similar fabric
  • Measuring tape
  • Fabric marker
  • Pins or fabric clips
  • Scissors
  • Safety pin or Kirby grip
  • Sewing machine
  • Serger (optional)
Fabric

1. Prepare your fabric

For all sizes, you will need a piece of fabric 76 inches (194 cm) in length and 55 inches (140 cm) wide.

Preparing the fabric

Fold it in half widthways with the right side inside, and cut along the fold so you have two pieces of the same size.

Preparing the fabric

2. Sew the center seam

Measure and mark 7 inches (17 cm) from the top and bottom edges of the side you’ve just cut for sizes S and M. Increase this to 7.5 inches (18 cm) for L and XL.

Pin or clip the fabric together between the two marks.

Sewing the center seam

Finish the open edges outside the marks on your serger or using an overlock stitch on your sewing machine.

Sewing the center seam

Sew the remainder of the seam between the marks together with a straight stitch and finish the raw edges of the seam allowance.

Sewing the side seams

3. Sew the side seams

Open out the fabric and refold it lengthways with the right side inside.

Match the edges of the openings.

Measure and mark 7 inches (17 cm) from the openings along the raw edge for sizes S and M, and 7.5 inches (18 cm) for sizes L and XL.

Clip or pin the two seams together from the marks to the end.

Finish the raw edges of the openings and sew and finish both seams as you did before.

4. Finish the neckline and armholes

Turn in and pin a single hem along the eight open edges.

Finishing the neckline and armholes

Sew the hems in place with a regular straight stitch.

Open the seam allowances at the top of each opening and stitch straight across them.

Shoulder ties

5. Make and attach the shoulder ties

Cut four strips of fabric, each 14 inches (35 cm) long by 1.6 inches (4 cm) wide.

Fold them in half lengthways with the right side inside.

Attaching the shoulder ties

Sew the long edge and one short edge of each.

Snip the corners and use a safety pin or Kirby grip to turn them right side out.

Attaching the shoulder ties

Stitch the open end of one tie diagonally to one of the outer corners of the neckline on the right side.

Attaching the shoulder ties

Fold the tie over so the raw edge is hidden and sew it in place above the fold.

Attaching the shoulder ties

Attach the other ties to the three remaining corners in the same way and tie them in pairs on each shoulder.

Hemming the legs

6. Hem the legs

Finish the raw edges at the bottom of each leg on your serger or sewing machine.

Turn up a single hem and sew in place.

You can leave it loose and flowing or cinch the waist with a wide tie or elastic belt.

It looks amazing dressed up for evening and works equally well for a relaxed daytime look.
