Tools and materials:

Beach towel

1. Cut out 2 rectangles

Use a yardstick or a ruler to measure 2 identical rectangles from the towel. Mark them with a washable marking pen and cut them out. These will become the panels of your DIY beach tote bag.

2. Cut out the corners

Lay the cut rectangles right-sides together and cut out the same size square corners on 1 end. Measure before cutting to be precise.

3. Sew down the sides and bottom

While the right sides are still facing each other, sew along the sides of the DIY tote bag body. Feel free to use straight pins to hold the fabric together as you sew.

Where to sew

Sew along the bottom of the DIY tote bag as well, making sure to exclude the corners for now.

4. Sew the corners

Open up the corners and flatten them, like this:

Then sew across to close each corner. Then turn the body of the DIY tote bag right-side-out.

5. Make straps and attach them

Cut out 2 identical, long strips of the towel from the excess fabric, ensuring that they are a comfortable length and width for the straps of your DIY tote bag.

Essentially, you’ll fold each in half vertically with the printed side of the fabric facing inward. Then sew each to make 2 long tubes.

Turn each tube right-side-out (you can use a safety pin to do this) and pin them on the inside of your bag. Then sew them in place.
