Tools and materials:

Loose t-shirt

1. The t-shirt

You need a long t-shirt that’s loose enough to fit over your hips.

2. Make the cut

Lay the t-shirt out flat and line up the side and lower edges carefully.

Cut straight across the shirt through both layers just below the armholes. Use a ruler to keep the line straight.

Use the points of your scissors to make a small hole in the outer layer of the hem, about 1 inch (2.5 cm) either side of the center.

Thread the tie through the hem, feeding it in through one hole, around the circumference of the hem and out of the other hole.

Pull your new skirt on and use the tie as a drawstring to gather the waistline.

You can leave the lower edge as it is or turn up a narrow hem.
