How a Straw Can Help You Sew Straight Lines
Do you find it hard to hold your clothes straight when sewing with a sewing machine? Do they move from side to side, and you end up with wobbly lines?
Here, I’m going to show you how to resolve that and be able to sew straight lines. This top hack involves using a straw. Let me show you what to do!
Tools and materials:
- Sewing machine
- Straw
- Sellotape
- Scissors
1. Cut the straw
First, cut the straw to make it smaller.
2. Tape it down
Next, tape the straw down to the right of the needle.
How much space you leave in between the needle and the straw will depend on how close to the edge of the fabric you want your stitches to go.
3. Sew
Now line your item of clothing up with the straw and proceed to sew it.

Now when you sew, you are able to make a nice straight line. Lining the material up with the straw prevents it from wobbling and moving from side to side.
This is an awesome hack to help you make your sewing neater.

Great Idea, thank you. My mother used to use a piece of sticky tape and measure where she wanted her seam measurement to be from the needle hole and tape the piece of tape directly to the metal plate.
Good idea. I’ve used washi tape as it’s easy to remove as needed. But I am goin to use this method as well on heavier fabric.
