Tools and materials:
- 2 hair ties
- Bobby pins
- Curling iron (optional)
1. Split your hair into 2 equal ponytails
Start by leaving out some face-framing pieces of hair in the front.
Then split the rest of your hair into 2 even sections, creating 2 ponytails at the back of your head (not too high or low), 1 on top of the other. You can use a clip to keep the top ponytail out of the way while you tie the bottom ponytail.
2. Split the top ponytail, make a knot, then secure it
If the roots of the ponytails aren’t close, tug at each to bring them a bit closer together. Tighten each before continuing.
Split the top ponytail into 2 sections and tie a knot with them as if you were tying your shoe: cross them and flip 1 tail through the opening.
Tighten it so it lays against your head.
Use your fingers to spread out the knot.
Stick a bobby pin into both sides to secure it.
3. Make a knot with the lower ponytail and secure it
Move the bottom ponytail up more and tighten it if necessary.
Let the ends from the top ponytail hang to either side and make the same kind of knot with your bottom ponytail.
Stretch it out and secure it with 2 bobby pins.
4. Make a knot or 2 with the hanging hair
Combine the hanging hair (a total of 4 sections) and make another knot under the first 2. Then secure it with a bobby pin.
If the length of your hair permits, make another knot with the remaining hair. Insert a bobby pin to secure it.
Keep knotting until you run out of hair. Then wrap each short end around a finger and secure each with a bobby pin.
Remove your finger and stretch out each little loop.
5. Finishing touches
If you like it how this viral hairstyle looks right now, then feel free to stop here:
I’m going for a boho, messy vibe, so I’m going to slightly deconstruct this updo by pulling out very small pieces of hair.
Pinch and pull gently at the knotted sections to create more volume.
Pinch and pull at the sides, all around the knotted buns for added texture.
Curl the small sections of hair that you pulled out as well as the face-framing hair.
There’s nothing that I love more than a messy, lived-in easy hair updo idea! Here’s the final look of this viral hairstyle from a few angles:
