Turn a Lace Tablecloth Into THIS

Jessica Shaw
by Jessica Shaw

Lace is a wonderful fabric to work with because it doesn’t fray. I always grab any lace tablecloths I see in the thrift shop, especially vintage ones.

I turned this lovely tablecloth into a pretty summer top in less than half an hour and had plenty left over.

Keep reading to see how!

Tools and materials:

  • Lace tablecloth
  • 1/2 inch (1 cm) wide ribbon
  • Sleeveless top as template
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
Lace tablecloth

1. Cut out the fronts

I was lucky enough to find a full size tablecloth, but you could use a smaller one.

Cutting the tablecloth

Fold it in half.

Fold your top in half lengthways and place the fold to the open edges of the doubled cloth.

Line up the lower edge of your top with the lace edging.

Using a top as a template

Cut around your top, leaving a seam allowance on the outside edge.

Cut-out lace pieces

Trim the neckline curve to 3 inches (7.5 cm) deep.

2. Cut out the back

Place the center front of one of the pieces on to the folded edge of the tablecloth. Line up the lower edges.

Cut around the front, making the back neckline curve approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep.

Assembling the top

3. Assemble the top

Place the two front pieces on top of the back, with the right sides facing.

Sew them together at the shoulder and side seams.

Cutting the ribbon

4. Ribbon ties

Slip the vest on.

Cut two lengths of ribbon about 20 inches (50 cm) long.

Assembling the top

Pin and sew them on each side of the center fronts on the inside.
