Dressing Cool During Summer’s Hottest Months

Summer kicked off with a vengeance this year, and it’s been hot, hot, hot through most of the U.S. With scorching heat waves becoming a regular occurrence, how’s a girl supposed to stay cool and cute during all the fun in the sun to be had?

With the peak heat of July and August coming, I’m turning to some tried and true summer outfits that are perfect for outings of all types and for packing up for a getaway.

Try out these ideas for dressing cool during summer’s hottest months.

Classic Shorts and T-shirt Combo

Nothing says summer like shorts and T-shirts. But make it cute! I love loose-fitting cargo shorts that don’t cling to those problem areas you may be self-conscious about. (Know what I mean, ladies?) Plus, loose-fitting clothing allows a breeze to blow through and keeps you cooler and dryer in the heat. Pair your shorts with a loose, sleeveless T-shirt made from all cotton. Don’t forget some playful kicks on your feet. I love these light, slip-on sneakers that go with just about everything. Stick with lighter colors that reflect light rather than absorb it. Top it off with a cute bucket hat and fun shades to keep the sun’s damaging UV rays off your face.  Shop cargo shorts.

Classic Sundress

Who says you can’t bring the glamour when it’s sweltering outside? I love reaching for a sundress any day of the week. The spaghetti straps and swing skirt, fit-and-flare style, keeps you cool and looks ultra feminine. Pair it with a wide-brim hat and oversized dark sunglasses for Hollywood movie star vibes. A pair of ballet flats will keep your feet cool while looking polished. Shop sundress.

Maxi Skirt and Tank Top Combo

I used to think long skirts were a ridiculous idea for summer, even though I see them everywhere. That is until I tried one. Using the concept that loose clothing keeps you cooler, a maxi skirt is surprisingly efficient at keeping you cool and allowing air circulation around your legs. It also doubles as a cover-up from getting too much sun. Pair one in a tropical print with a tank top, and you will have a beach-ready look that is perfect for your next coastal vacay. Don’t forget a wide-brim straw hat and tinted shades to complete the look. Shop maxi skirt.

Bonus Tip – when out in the summer sun, a must-wear with any outfit is your SPF sunscreen. Skin damage from the sun’s UV rays is no joke. Carry lotions or an SPF top with you and wear religiously. For more on SPF clothing, see my previous article.

Now that you know some ways to stay cool during summer’s hottest months, which one will you try?
