Grab a Towel and Let's Make Shorts!
I found this cherry patterned towel and immediately wanted to make a two-piece set for the pool from it.
I’m thinking of a pair of towel shorts and a matching top.
Today, I’m going to make the shorts and I’ll decide on the top later.
Tools and materials:
- Bath towel or sheet
- Plain matching fabric
- Shorts as template
- Zipper or elastic
- Rotary cutter or scissors
- Fabric marker
- Pins
- Sewing machine
1. Trace the shorts
Your towel needs to be at least bath towel size.
Keep the towel double.
Fold a pair of shorts that fit you well in half lengthways at the front crotch.
Place them on top of the towel and cut around them, adding a half inch (1 cm) seam allowance. I find a rotary cutter gives the cleanest cut on toweling.
Refold the shorts at the back crotch and repeat, so you have two front and two back pieces.
2. Side pockets
Fold the plain fabric into four layers.
Trace around any side pocket piece and cut it out, so you have four pocket pieces.
Pin a pocket piece to each of the side seams and sew in place.
3. Assemble the shorts
Join the two center front and center back seams at the crotch with the right sides facing.
Turn one section right side out and place it inside the other, so the right sides are together.
Match the two crotch seams and sew the inner leg seams.
Sew the side seams, stitching around the pocket bags.
Cute DIY towel shorts
I haven’t decided yet whether to make an elasticated waistband or add a zipper.
You can literally replicate any clothes you already own by tracing around them.
Let me know what you think of these cute shorts in the comments.
