How Your Jeans Can Grow With You as You Gain Weight

I’ve gained some weight recently and sitting down in my favorite Ralph Lauren jeans became a no-no.

Instead of throwing them out, here’s my jeans hack for TikTok on how I fixed them.

I had some ties left over from a recent project, but you can find lots of them in thrift stores.

Tools and materials:

  • Too tight jeans
  • 4 men’s ties
  • Seam ripper
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine
Opening the seams

1. Open the seams

Seam rip the outer leg seams open from the hem to the waistband.

If necessary, cut open the waistband side seams.

2. Pin the ties

With the wide section at the hem, pin the outer edge of a man’s tie to one side of an open seam, with the right sides facing.

Pinning the ties

Pin a second tie to the other side of the seam in the same way.

Pin the two free edges of the ties together.

Repeat with two more ties on the other leg.

Sewing the seams

3. Sew the seams

Sew the three seams on each leg with a regular straight stitch.

I left the points of the ties intact below each seam because I really love the funky look it gives.

The two ties on each side give just enough extra movement for me, but you could add a third one if you needed it.

Mix and match your ties however you want. There are so many styles and patterns to choose from and they’re all the same length.

I’d love to know in the comments what you think of this idea.

Looks like this makes bottom of jeans wider instead of at waist where you need the extra room. At least hem up the points of ties..."funky" look not for everyone.
