There are so many ways to do this, but I’m going to show you how to sew a scrunchie using my favorite method.

It’s sometimes called the “burrito method” because of the folding technique used.

It’s a fun and almost magical way to make a scrunchie.

  • Fabric
  • 1/2” (1 cm) wide elastic
  • Iron
  • Sewing machine
How to sew a scrunchie

1. Make a fabric loop

Cut a strip of fabric 20 inches (45 cm) long by 3 inches (7.5 cm) wide.

Join the short ends with the right sides facing.

2. Join the elastic

Cut a 7 or 8 inch (18 to 20 cm) length of elastic.

Sew or knot the ends together. I prefer to sew elastic of this width.

3. Make the burrito

Place the loop of elastic over the fabric at the seam.

Bring the top or inner edges of the fabric together over the elastic.

Bring the lower or outer edges of the fabric together over the inner ones, leaving the rest of the elastic outside.

4. Sew the scrunchie

Start sewing the outer edges only of the scrunchie together.

When you get to the end of the fabric you can see, gently pull more fabric from the inside and continue sewing the outer edges.

Stop sewing when you are about an inch (2.5 cm) from where you started.

Pull the remainder of the fabric from the inside through the opening you left.

Tuck in the edges of the opening.

And like magic, you have a scrunchie!

You don’t have to hand sew the ends or tuck one inside the other.

It can take a bit of practice but I’m convinced this is the quickest, neatest and easiest scrunchie technique.
