How to Shop Your Closet for New Outfits

Today, I want to show you how to shop your closet, taking inspiration from the Spring Summer 2024 runway.

I aim to pick out the elements of a style that I find attractive, using clothes I already own. It’s a great way to make new outfits, save money on clothes and reduce fashion consumption.

Chic outfit ideas

1. Structured black

I’m a big fan of wearing black in the summer, so these looks really attracted me.

I loved the drama of these chic outfit ideas and the mixture of structured, fitted items with very slouchy or full ones.

I’m not trying to copy these looks exactly, rather to draw inspiration from the common elements of them and recreate those with items I own.

I began by mixing a structured bustier with a pair of casual boyfriend style denim jeans. I wanted a very relaxed fit on the bottom half.

I loved the romantic, voluminous sleeves on the Stella McCartney top but I wasn’t sure if this would be something I would actually wear.

I wanted to test out what that would look like first, so I took a long-sleeved crochet blouse, unbuttoned it and wore it underneath the corset top.

I also played with the proportions by keeping the bustier untucked and lowering the waistline a little, so the pants feel even more slouchy.

Now I have an outfit that looks beautiful and feels like me.

2. Contrast and tension

It’s no secret I’m a big fan of Celine’s. All three inspirations for this next look came from her.

What struck me most were the oversized tops mixed with a very short hemline and the functional, bulky footwear.

There’s still a ladylike vibe even though these looks are quite sporty.

Doing this kind of breakdown decouples my mind from thinking I have to go and buy these exact items and instead points me towards how I can find the concepts behind them in my closet.

To recreate these elements from my closet, I took a cotton sweater with a boyfriend fit and teamed it with a straight miniskirt. This is definitely something I would actually wear.

I would probably enjoy wearing these little socks with the sneakers.

However, I was curious to see how it would look to pick up the black from the sweater in my footwear.

This outfit would be too hot for summer, but for spring or fall these flat ankle boots absolutely hit the mark.

To me, this nails it in the sense that I’ve come up with an outfit based on the elements I identified and that works for me and my body type, without needing to buy anything new.

3. Tall black boots

The inspiration here comes from an outfit by Celine and one from Victoria Beckham. They both incorporate tall black boots which create a contrast with the diaphanous and light colored top pieces.

Again we have the structured versus slouchy vibe from the first look, which seems to be a trend several designers have incorporated.

These outfits to me say ease with elegance and they use proportions well.

I love the layered neutrals, but if you’re shopping your closet and neutrals aren’t your thing, you can definitely add some color play into them very easily.

There’s a lot of volume in the dress which counteracts the heaviness of the boots, so the visual weight is already balanced. I love the juxtaposition of the basket bag with them as well.

I’m not sure where exactly I would wear an outfit like this but I really hope I find one! Maybe for evening without the sunglasses, somewhere it gets cooler at night.

Shopping your closet is I think the best way to get to know your sense of self and your personal style without shopping.

If I can create something new using items I already have, it’s a full on win for me.
