Tools and materials:
- Button-down shirt
- Scissors
- Double fold bias tape
- Sewing machine and thread
- Iron and ironing surface
1. Cut off the bottom
Fold the shirt in half, vertically and cut off the bottom, just above the last button. This will give you a crop length top.
2. Cut out the button placket and collar
Cut out the collar and button placket, which is the strip of fabric where the buttons and buttonholes are.
3. Attach bias tape
Sew double fold bias tape onto the raw edges at the front of your DIY top.
Then try on the top and mark where you’ll want to attach the tie detail.
4. Create and attach a tie detail
To make the ties, create 2 long, narrow tubes from the excess shirt fabric. Sew each folded with the right sides in and turn them right-sides-out.
Then sew the small, bottom edge of each piece. Attach them on the inside of your shirt, where you marked in the previous step.
5. Iron down and sew a bottom seam
Fold the bottom of the shirt inward about ½” and iron it down.
Sew along the seam, as well as the seams at the front.
Here’s the final look of this stylish DIY top made from a men’s button-down.
I’m loving the summery, cropped hem!
