5 Chic Ways to Style a Summer Silk Scarf

There are many videos on the internet about tying scarves, some of which might require a degree in engineering to master. If you're looking to turn your average summer silk scarf into an evening dress or some intricate blouse, this is not that video!

Today, I'm sharing five of my simplest and easiest ways to style a silk scarf during the summer.

I’m using two vintage scarves for these styles. One is a Gucci floral scarf, 34x34 inches, in a heavier weighted silk.

The other is a vintage red and white stripe scarf, 30x30 inches, with a lighter, almost crepe-like texture. However, you can achieve these looks with cotton or blended textiles too.

1. Halter top

One of my favorite ways to wear a silk scarf as a top is the simple halter top style. This DIY scarf wrap top is perfect for my small-chested ladies or anyone who loves to feel a bit freer in the summer.

Start by tying a knot at the nape of your neck, adjusting the collar as you like, and then tying another knot around the lower part of your back.

If there's too much material around your waist, fold the excess into the center and tuck it under. This creates a more streamlined and tailored fit.

I love showing how this looks with both high contrast, like a black trouser, and low contrast, like a pink skirt. This way, you can see how to create a monochromatic look or add a splash of color.

2. Tube top

Next, let’s style the scarf as a tube top. This one can be worn with a strapless bra. I prefer a padded cup bra for a more finished look under the scarf.

Fold the scarf in half into a triangle, making sure the majority of the print is visible. Make one side of the triangle longer, tie the ends around your bra, and tuck any extra pieces flat against your back.

This creates a great tube top. You can leave the point of the triangle hanging over your trousers for a dramatic look or tuck it under the bra for a more fitted feel. This style is both comfortable and chic.

3. Purse handle

For a touch of elegance, tie the scarf around your purse handle. Consider the color contrast and the bag's size.

For example, with a beachy outfit and a basket bag, a simple knot using the Gucci scarf adds a subtle pop of color.

Lay the scarf out flat, fold it into a long rectangular shape, and tie it around the handle.

This technique works well with structured top-handle bags and can even add structure to floppier ones. It’s a small detail that can significantly elevate your look. This is how to tie a scarf on a bag to add a stylish touch.

4. Hair accessory

Wearing a scarf in your hair is a fantastic way to add a stylish touch. I prefer the red and white stripe scarf for its crepey texture, which grips my hair better.

Fold the scarf into a rectangle, place it at the crown of your head, wrap it around, and tie a knot at the base of your neck. Adjust as needed for a relaxed, natural look.

This method also works with a ponytail — just tie the knot over the ponytail to hide the elastic.

You can also wrap the scarf around a ballerina bun for a secure and elegant hairstyle. The scarf texture plays a significant role in keeping it in place without bobby pins.

5. Belt

Lastly, style your scarf as a belt. This is perfect for traveling or adding a pop of color to your denim. Use a subtle scarf if your outfit already has a lot of visual interest.

Fold the scarf into a rectangle, loop it through the belt loops, and tie the knot off-center for a cleaner look. This way, the ends fall flat against your legs, creating a harmonious and stylish finish.
