Here is a very easy pants sewing pattern in four sizes for palazzo trouser pants. These DIY pants have a smooth front waistband, side pockets and an inner leg split.

I used 1 meter of 52 inch (130 cm) wide fabric to make the pants, pockets and waistband.

I give the measurements for size 38 European (S) but I show you how to add half an inch (1 cm) to most of the measurements for each size increase.

Tools and materials:

  • 52 inch (130 cm) wide fabric
  • 1.5 inch (4 cm) wide elastic
  • Large safety pin
  • Measuring tape
  • Ruler
  • Fabric marker
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Iron
  • Sewing machine

Shaping the pants' front

2. Shape the front of the pants

Unfold the fabric.

Draw a line along the right edge tapering from 2 inches (5 cm) at the center front to the center back and cut it out.

Trim half an inch (1 cm) from the inner front leg seam.

Shaping the pants' front

Separate the pieces along the centerline.

Put the back sections aside.

Drafting the pockets

3. Pockets

Cut a strip of fabric 32 inches (80 cm) long by 10.5 inches (26 cm) wide and fold it in half widthways twice.

Drafting the pockets

Place it under the front pants with the main fold towards you.

Trim the top and outside edges.

Drafting the pockets

Curve the lower front edge.

Put two of the pocket pieces aside.

Drafting the pockets

Measure 2.5 inches (6 cm) along the top edge and 5 inches (13 cm) down the outside edge and join the marks with a diagonal line.

Cut along the line through all layers for the pocket opening.

Mark the wrong side of each piece.

Drafting the pockets

Place the shaped pocket piece on the pants with the wrong sides facing. Sew along the diagonal edge.

Press the seam towards the pocket and understitch.

Fold the pocket to the inside and press.

Drafting the pockets

Place the larger pocket piece on top with the right sides facing and sew the pocket bags together.

Drafting the pockets

Fold the pocket under the front section and sew in place along the top and side edges.

Assembling the pants

4. Assemble the pants

Place the back sections on the fronts with the right sides facing and sew the outside leg seams.

Put the joined pieces with the right sides together and sew the front and back crotch seams.

Assembling the pants

Fold the pants with the crotch seams in the center.

Decide on the height of the inner leg split and join the seam above the splits.

Leg splits and hem

5. Leg splits and hem

Finish the raw edges of the inner seam and the hem edge.

Turn the hem edge to the right side on both corners of the split and sew in place.

Leg splits and hem

Fold the edges of the split to the wrong side and sew across the top of the split and down each side, turning the corners to the right side out.

Leg splits and hem

Complete the hem on each leg.

Adding the waistband

6. Waistband

Cut a strip of fabric 38.5 inches (96 cm) long and 4 inches (10 cm) deep and join it into a circle.

Fold it in half lengthways with the wrong side inside.

With the seam at the center back, pin and sew it to the waist edge of the pants, right sides facing. Leave an opening near the center back seam.

Use a safety pin to thread the elastic through the waistband. Overlap the ends and sew securely then sew the opening closed.

Adding the waistband

Stretch and smooth the front waistband as much as you can and pin through the elastic by the pocket openings.

Adding the waistband

Topstitch through the center of the waistband on the right side, stretching the elastic as you sew, excluding the front waistband between the pins.

You can adjust the height of the splits to the level you want.

These palazzo trouser pants work best in a fairly firm fabric. The elasticated waistband is hidden from the front, so they’re comfortable but still stylish.
