Lightweight Jackets for Spring

After a long, cold winter, the first few days of warmth are very welcome. I can go out without tights or leggings; best of all, I can wear all the lightweight jackets in my wardrobe. I’m a sucker for little jackets, especially since you can often find them in bright, fun textures, prints and styles. But there is a very short window of spring weather when it’s not too cold and not too hot to wear them. So the end of April and May is about all the time I have.

It’s so easy to pair a lightweight jacket with just about anything from your wardrobe, from dresses to t-shirts and jeans. Be aware of the length because pairing a jacket that is longer than your waist with a long dress or skirt can look a bit frumpy. Think about belting it, or look for cropped jackets instead. If you still plan to wear your leggings, a longer lightweight jacket can serve to cover the hips and butt area if that’s something you’re self-conscious about.

Here are some ideas for wearing lightweight jackets for spring.

Printed Jean Jacket

Add some pizazz to the classic jean jacket look by picking one with a print. Mine has playful insects on it. You can find many with a floral print that’s perfect for spring. A jean jacket is a staple in the wardrobe and can go from casual conservative to edgy cool.  Shop fun print jean jacket.

Embroidered Velvet Jacket

Don’t rule out velvet as a daytime option, especially when it comes to a lightweight jacket. This plush material gives a look of elegance and, depending on the style, a glam or boho vibe. Look for one with floral embroidery to tie it into springtime.

Vintage Jacket

When it comes to style, I love vintage through and through. I mix it in with more modern pieces or wear it fully period-correct. One of my favorites is the little vintage suit jacket. These suits, often in tweeds and brocade materials, were popular in the 1950s and ‘60s when women dressed up more. You’re lucky if you find the matching jackets and skirts still together (and both pieces fit our more evolved body shapes). You can’t beat a little vintage jacket to add some character to your look. Pair it with a T-shirt and jeans for a fun weekend look.
