Very often, curls created with flat irons can look very old-fashioned and outdated. They often look more like large ringlets than natural curls.

But this tutorial will show you a new way to create curls that look like natural beach waves, especially in your short hair.

Parting hair

1. Prep and part your hair

Decide where you want to part your hair, whether in the middle or on the side.

Ensure your hair is dry and detangled.

2. Section your hair

Begin at the bottom of your hair and work your way up, sectioning off small portions of hair to curl.

Use your fingers to slice up each section as you go.

3. Use this curling technique for the bottom

Hold a flat iron horizontally and place a small section of hair in it.

Rotate the flat iron up and then tilt it inwards, then release the hair.

This technique creates a modern, soft wave instead of tight curls.

Continue this rocking motion as you move up the head, adjusting the direction based on the length of the hair.

As the hair you are curling gets longer it will take more rocks of your flat iron to get the wave effect.

Work out how many rocks it will require to end with an “out” and then start with a rock in or rock out, depending on how many rocks you will need.

4. Curl your hair around your face

For sections around the face, start slightly away from the roots to keep the style modern.

Twist the flat iron once, then pull it out to create a soft coil.

Then put your flat iron around the hair just below that curl, and finish off that section with a loose curl with your flat iron.

By doing the one curl and pulling the iron out, then finishing off the end gives you a soft wave rather than a tight ringlet.

Repeat as necessary for longer sections of hair.

5. Make curls in the back

When curling the back sections, imagine a line dividing the head into two halves.

Curl each side away from the face, finishing with a slight bevel at the ends.

6. Cool your curls

Allow the curls to cool completely before touching them to ensure they hold their shape.

No, you don’t actually have to go stand out in the snow: just let your curls naturally cool down!

Combing hair

7. Comb out your hair

Use a wide-tooth comb to gently brush through the curls for a softer, more natural look.

Adding texturizing spray

8. Add finishing touches

Apply a texturizing spray to add dimension and hold to the waves.

Focus on areas where you want more texture, like the front sections and bottom layers.
