Small round zippered pouches have multiple uses, for example as a coin purse, or to carry your ear buds, lip balm or phone charger.

Today, I’m going to show you how to sew a coin bag purse with a zipper and loop that you can clip to your key fob or purse.

You only need some scrap fabric and batting, a swivel clip and a zipper - so let’s get going!

Tools and materials:

  • 6 inch (15 cm) squares of main and contrast fabric
  • Lightweight fusible batting
  • 6 inch (15 cm) zipper
  • 1/2 inch (1.2 cm) swivel clip
  • Circle template 5 inches (12.5 cm) in diameter
  • Pins or fabric clips
  • Fabric marker
  • Ruler
  • Rotary cutter or scissors
  • Sewing machine
Materials list

1. Cut out your fabric

I’m making four coin pouches at a time.

For each one you need two 5 inch (12.5 cm) circles of main fabric, two of contrast fabric and two or four circles cut from lightweight batting or other stabilizer. I used a CD as my circle template.

Cut a 2 inch (5 cm) wide strip of one of your fabrics at least 3 inches (8 cm) long for the loop.

Making loop

2. Make the loops

Fold the fabric strip in half lengthwise with the wrong side inside and press the fold.

Open it up and fold both long edges in to touch the center crease.

Making loop

Fold the strip in half again.

Making loop

Top stitch along both the long edges.

Preparing fabric

3. Prepare the fabric

Iron the batting on to the wrong side of each fabric circle. To reduce bulk, you can attach it to the main fabric only.

Preparing fabric

Fold one main fabric circle and one lining circle in half and mark the centers.

Cut each circle into two semi circles.

Inserting zipper

4. Insert the zipper

Close the zipper.

Pin a main semi circle centrally to one of the zipper tapes with the right sides together.

Inserting zipper

Place a half lining piece right side down on the back of the zipper tape.

Line up the edges on the zipper and the semi circles.

Inserting zipper

Sew the semi circles to the zipper tape.

Inserting zipper

Open out the fabric and top stitch the seam along the edge of the main fabric.

Inserting zipper

Do the same with the matching semi circles, place the main fabric right side down on the right side of the other zipper tape and the lining fabric right side down on the back of the tape.

Sew in place and top stitch the seam on the right side.

Inserting zipper

Open the zipper and bring the tab to the center.

Stitch across the two tapes above the slider level with the circle to close them and stop the zipper from opening beyond them.

Sew the lower ends of the tapes level with the other edge of the pouch in the same way.

Assembling pouches

5. Assemble the pouches

Thread the swivel clip over the loop. Fold the loop in half.

Place the back lining piece face down and the back main fabric on top of it, right side uppermost.

Pin the loop to the edge of the circles, with the swivel clip facing inwards.

Assembling pouches

Open the zipper at least half way.

Place the zippered fabric right side down on top of the loop, lining up the open end of the zipper with the loop.

Assembling pouches

Pin all the circles together around the outer edges.

Trim the circles at the back to match the zippered fabric.

Assembling pouches

Sew around the edges of the circles, backstitching over the zipper tapes at both ends. Ensure you catch all the layers in your stitching.

Trim the edges close to the stitch line.

Assembling pouches

Turn the coin purse right side out through the zipper opening.

Push the seam into a curve and finger press the edge.

Topstitch the edge of the fabric semi circles only. Don’t sew over the zipper tape.

You can make these coin pouch purses in any size, just adjust the size of the zipper accordingly. It does pay to use good quality fabrics if you’re sewing them to sell.

This is a great project for a beginner to learn how to work with circles of fabric.

I don't sew. I am definitely all thumbs, but I have a sister who is talented. What a wonferful idea! I've saved a some of my mom's most memorable clothing since she passed, thinking that we could make some sentimental crafts out of them. ❤️ Thank you.
